Belkind, Israel
(1861-1929)
   Zionist leader of Belorussian origin. He was a leader of the first Bilu group to go to Palestine in 1882. He founded the first Hebrew school in Jaffa in 1889 and an agricultural school for orphans of the first Kishinev pogroms. After World War I he established another agricultural school for orphans of the Ukrainian pogroms. He was the author of Hebrew, Yiddish and Russian textbooks on Jewish subjects.
